These are some games / activities we've been doing at Queen Alexandra E.A.T Sessions. The kids really seemed to enjoy the "What are we making today?" hangman game because it gets them excited for the recipe. I think these are good games / activities to do with the kids because they are all involved and they get to work together. In this activity, we gave each child 3-4 pieces of paper with a food written on it and they get to decide which food group it belongs to. Ex. Grains, Fruit & Veggies, Milk & Alt. or Meat & Alt. This activity was to introduce and teach the kids a little bit about the food system and how it works. We started with a timeline and as a group, the kids and the leaders talked about the order of the food system.

A learning experience that made an impact on me was giving a child a modified version of the recipe. When we were making guacamole, one kid said that she doesn't like corn or beans so I told her that I wanted her to try the recipe regardless of her dislikes. To do this, I told her that before we add the corn or beans to the guacamole, I would put aside a little portion for her to eat. After hearing this, the child got really happy and excited to eat the food. Throughout the session, she thanked me multiple times for doing this. Even though it was only a little thing I did for the child, I still made an impact on her which allowed her to try the recipe.
A cooking technique I taught the kids was to take the skin off the avacado instead of trying to take the insides out. When we were making guacamole, the avacados were very hard and difficult to remove from the skin. Most of the kids helping spoon out the avacados were having a hard time because the avacados weren't ripe or soft enough. I showed them that they could hold the avacado skin side facing up and use the spoon to remove the skin which made the process a lot easier. All of the kids were relieved that the skin came off after trying this new method. One of the kids even said, " I'm trying this trick next time I eat avacados."
Favorite quote a kid said was:
"I like normal cheese." I was helping a girl in the program grate cheese and I asked her " what is your favorite type of cheese?" She replied " I like normal cheese." I'm guessing by this she meant she liked cheddar cheese because it was the type of cheese we were grating. Also, I think she has only tried cheddar cheese before so this type of cheese would be the most typical and familiar to her besides swiss or mozzarella. I've gotten an app on my phone to help remind me and encourage me to drink water. Here is my progress for the past week: I was able to drink more than three cups of water each day.
I have been sick over winter break so my daily dose of water includes honey + water, lemon + water, and tea. p.s. the honey I used was bought from a local farm last fall --> Honeyview Farm
All the reusable water bottles I own are the same color (my favourite color!) so I feel encouraged to use them.
My goal is to drink at least 3 cups of water each day. I aim for three cups because growing up, I hated the taste of plain water. During the summer, I began to drink LOTS of water so I hope to continue drinking water throughout the year.
